How to write a Christmas card in four lines
Borrow a message above for the opening, then build the rest around it. This order works for almost anyone.
1. Greeting“Merry Christmas, Jo!” or “Happy holidays to you all.”
2. One real detailA memory from this year, something they did for you, or a plan you share.
3. A specific wishRest after a busy year, a smooth move, a happy first Christmas with the baby.
4. Sign-offPick one from the list below and sign by hand, even if the rest is printed.
Merry Christmas, Jo!
I still laugh about our wrong turn on the way to the lake in July.
I hope the new job gives you a proper break this December.
Merry and bright, Sam
Christmas card sign-offs
Swap “Love,” for something seasonal. The warmer ones suit family and friends; “Season's greetings” and “Best wishes for the new year” suit work cards.
Warmly,
With love and cheer,
Merry everything,
Peace and joy,
Love and snowflakes,
Merry and bright,
Season's greetings,
Fondly,
With gratitude,
Holly jolly hugs,
Blessings,
Joyfully,
Love always,
Until next Christmas,
Hugs from our house to yours,
Best wishes for the new year,
Make a card feel handwritten, not mass-produced
Write the personal line by hand even if you print the rest. A two-sentence note beats a long printed newsletter.
Use a pen that won't smear on glossy card stock. Gel and pigment ink pens dry fastest; see our pens for letter writing.
Address the envelope by hand and add a seasonal stamp. Our envelope decorating guide covers what the post office will accept.
A wax seal is a lovely finish for cards you hand deliver. If you mail them, read can you mail a wax seal? first.
Christmas card questions
What do you write in a Christmas card?
Start with a greeting, add one personal line about the year or a memory you share, wish them something specific for the season, then sign off. Four short lines are enough; the personal line is the part people remember.
Is it OK to write “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”?
Yes. “Happy holidays” and “Season's greetings” are safe choices for coworkers, clients, or anyone whose traditions you don't know. Save religious wording for people you know will welcome it.
What should I write in a Christmas card to someone who is grieving?
Keep it short and honest. Acknowledge that the season may feel different, say you are thinking of them, and avoid telling them how to feel. “No need to write back” takes away the pressure to reply.
How do you sign a Christmas card from a family?
List names in a consistent order, usually adults first, then children, then pets if you like: “Love, Sam, Alex, Mia and Biscuit.” A family surname works too: “Merry Christmas from the Parkers.”
When should I mail Christmas cards?
Aim for the first two weeks of December. USPS publishes recommended holiday send-by dates each fall, and the last date for First-Class Mail within the lower 48 states usually falls in the third week of December. Check usps.com for this year's dates, and mail overseas cards much earlier.
